Alejandro was born and raised in Colombia. He received his mining and metallurgy engineering degree and his master’s degree from the School of Mines in the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (UNAL). Alejandro spent his career at UNAL developing projects for Colombian national and regional Agencies, NGOs, and companies. He was an instructor at the School of Mines at UNAL in subjects such as mining economics, mine closure, and mining, and sustainable development. He did academic coordination of three versions of the Colombian Mining Congress (2013, 2014, and 2016), and participated in the Civil Society Table of the Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative – EITI in Colombia between 2013 and 2018. In January 2019, Alejandro joined the NSF-PIRE project Responsible Mining, Resilient Communities, and the Mining Geology Research Group. Since 2020, He is a part of the Communities and Resources Research Group.
